As an underwater photographer, I have spent my life beneath a glass ceiling. Peering upwards from the depths of a Florida spring, I have captured the beauty of the submerged aquatic wilderness, and yet as my head breaks through the surface, I am thrust back into a world where men still dominate my sport and career. A few years ago, I decided to reach out to other women and men in my community to gauge the current state of sexism in our sport. I felt that sexism had become so ubiquitous that our community accepted the unequal treatment of women. Did others feel the same? It was before the #MeToo hashtag brought women’s experiences into public discourse. I intended to write an article that was informative for men and affirmative for women. I wanted women to know they were not alone and men to learn about ways they could better support and promote women in diving. Sadly, I’m not sure if much has changed since I wrote the article, but I offer it again to continue the conversation. Click the link, then scroll down the page to see the full article.
