This morning I met with students from classrooms across North America to share the underwater geography of Canada. This month women explorers will share their work on Exploring by The Seat of Your Pants online classroom sessions. 50 hangouts will reach hundreds of classrooms around the world! Canada’s water wealth is unequivocal. Water resources here represent about seven per cent of the world’s renewable freshwater reserves. That said, Canadians have gotten a little lazy. With the sense that freshwater reserves are endless, Canadians are one of the highest users of water per capita in the world. Access to safe, clean water is important for world security and conservation of resources will become ever more important in the future.
National Action Plan is Needed As I packed my bags to depart for Canada’s North, I was confronted with the front page of Huffington Post. A full screen banner read “Canada is Melting.” In his article, Michael Bolen, reviews a 259 page report form the federal government that describes how Canada is warming at roughly the global average over the last half century. With no national plan for addressing climate change, he wonders how long we can keep our heads in the sand.
